History has taught us many times that all major hurricane disasters have 2 things in common: Lack of hurricane preparation and awareness. In preparing for Hurricane Rita, the hazards could come in several forms including: flooding, storm surges, tornadoes, and high winds. The important thing to keep in mind is to have a plan ahead of time.

Please use the following lists to help prepare for Hurricane Rita.

What to Do

Develop a family plan (potential hazards, safe areas, escape routes, emergency contacts, pets, insurance, etc.)
If ordered to evacuate, leave immediately
Plan your emergency destination in advance
Fill your gas tank(s)
Secure your home (roof, hurricane straps, impact resistant shutters, solid exterior doors, foot-bolts, door bracing)

First Aid Kit (prescription drugs, bandages, antibiotics, scissors, tape)
Cell Phone, Wallet, Cash
Flashlight and spare batteries
Portable radio
Important documents
Tools

If you take the following precautions against Hurricane Rita you will greatly mitigate the loss and damage you could experience. Some possessions are irreplaceable such as birth certificates, digital pictures, stocks, computer files, etc. In some cases, it is not enough to keep a copy of these in your residence.
